The old “college is always worth it” script is breaking. The clearest signal? Roughly a third of graduates now say their degree wasn’t worth the debt it took to get it. Many expected starter salaries around $52,000 but actually landed closer to $35,000. All while carrying $25,000–$50,000 or more in loans. Some are delaying buying a home. Saving for retirement. Moving out. Starting families. At the same time, only about 8% now believe a degree matters most in today’s job market. Skills-first hiring and degree-optional postings are surging.
